Compare Handpans

We get a lot of people ask, "Which handpan or handpan scale do you recommend I get or start with”, and although we can probably tell you that the most popular handpan model is the 9 Note in D Kurd (simply because most of the handpan videos online are in this scale), the ultimate decision factor is based on your own ear. In other words, you yourself have to choose the handpan based on what you feel and are drawn to the most. It’s too easy to simply pick a model based on somebody else’s interest.

Listen to your heart, use your ears, and see which handpan and scales call to you the most. At the end of the day, this is the handpan that you are going to be playing all of the time.

  • The Generation 4s

The Generation 4s are superb for complete handpan novices or those who may not want to spend over $700 for a handpan but who still wish to benefit from all of the same qualities found as on any other handpan. This includes but is not limited to pitch bends, overtones, as well the ability to play controlled notes both quietly and with force.

Our Generation 4 Handpans come in two series; Classic and Extravagant, the extravagant models being slightly more colorful and visually impressive.

  • The Generation 3s

The Generation 3s are deemed our "Virtuoso Handpan" specially because they have a particular superiority in sound projection intonation when played loud and with force. Although expensive, mostly buskers and professional musicians who intend to perform in front of large open crowds tend to lean towards the Generation 3s. They also come in quite the stunning color variations of either Blue, Purple and recently, Bronze!

The Generation 3s only offer Standard models at the current moment in time. For more extravagant options you might like to explore our Generation 4 or Generation 7 ranges.

  • The Generation 7s

The Generation 7s are a very special collection of our only stainless steel handpans which alone gives them a superiority in note sustain and resonance like few others on the market. If you have ever been to a sound healing ceremony/sound bath/sound journey and you heard the sound of a handpan that was rich and full, there is a good chance that this was a handpan made of stainless steel. The Generation 7s are mostly selected by those looking for a deeper connection with their instrument which touches on the ethereal or even spiritual. It is the sound of the Generation 7s that is most oftentimes the one that people hear before they go looking to purchase a handpan in the first place.

If you've got the extra $200 and wish for a handpan with superb sustain and resonance, go for a Generation 7. Their sheer sound quality, phenomenal sustain and all round versatility has been highly recommended by practically all owners. See their reviews here.

The Generation 7s come in a series of Classic, Mini, and Mutant models where; the Mini Handpans are tailored more towards light size-travelling, playing high-range melodies, and being easier to handle/carry; the Mutant Handpans are for those high-level performers or advanced learners looking to expand the number of notes on their handpan and therefore offer more melodic versatility; and the Standard models are for anyone wanting your traditional-sized handpan with the traditional number of notes. Each Generation 7 is hand-tuned, made-to-order, and crafted out of stainless steel with the same exceptional sustain heard on all NovaPans' Generation 7s, hence its reputation for being the "Sound Healing Handpan".
